Nitrogen management from outerspace

Messium

Messium is a London-based agricultural technology company that uses hyperspectral satellite imagery and AI to deliver laboratory-level nitrogen analysis for wheat crops—something not possible with traditional multispectral or NDVI-based approaches. While conventional satellites see in a handful of wavelengths, hyperspectral breaks the spectrum into up to 160 bands, allowing Messium to detect nitrogen's unique spectral fingerprint directly from space. The company's machine learning models were trained on over 20,000 geo-referenced crop samples matched with satellite imagery. Backed by the UK Space Agency, European Space Agency, and Innovate UK, Messium is now operating on farms across the UK, Europe, Australia, and North America. In 2025, Messium partnered with FarmTech to pilot the technology on winter wheat fields in Montana—the first trials of their kind in the Northern Great Plains. FarmTech is now the authorized US partner for Messium services.
